Six Liberty Local School District students sustained minor injuries when the school bus in which they were riding was hit by a vehicle at about 8:25 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Logangate Avenue and U.S. Route 62.

Four students were taken by emergency medical services to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown and have since been released, said Stan Watson, school superintendent. Two others were released to parents. Watson said he spoken to their parents, and the children are fine.

The students were from E.J. Blott Elementary School, which houses kindergarten through fourth grades. Other students were checked out on the scene and transferred to another bus. Watson said because of the students’ young age, a counselor spoke with them once they arrived at school. A school nurse also checked the students.

The Warren Post of Ohio State Highway Patrol gave this account: A car driven by Casey Ferguson, 21, of Westview Avenue, Hubbard, was westbound on Route 62, and the school bus was traveling north on Logangate. Ferguson failed to stop for a red traffic light at the intersection and struck the school bus on the right side. Ferguson was cited for failure to stop for a red light.

The school-bus driver was Barbara McKimmy of Hubbard, who was on her morning route picking up students. She was uninjured.

The highway patrol report on the crash doesn’t indicate whether Ferguson was hurt.

OSHP continues to investigate.
