Hazing, bullying, dating policies updated

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Board of Education approved new sections on dating violence to its hazing and bullying policies for the district’s policy manual.

The changes add requirements for education on dating violence required under Ohio House Bill 1.

Superintendent Damon Dohar explained that the district’s hazing and bullying policy has been in effect for three years, and only minor changes are being made to that policy, except for the addition of the dating violence language.

He said staff are to incorporate education for students in health classes for seventh- and eighth-graders that include advice to not let anyone touch them. Additionally, lessons will focus on the proper way of dating, and “the respect that is deserving of a man toward a woman and a woman toward a man,” Dohar said at this week’s board meeting.

Keith Urso appealing 15th DUI sentence

WARREN

Keith Urso, the 50-year-old Warren man sentenced to 10 years in prison in November for his 15th drunken-driving conviction, has appealed his sentence.

Urso was convicted during a jury trial before Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Public defender Atty. Anthony Consoldane filed a notice with the 11th District Court of Appeals stating that grounds for appeal include Judge Logan denying Urso the opportunity to secure the services of an expert witness, and Judge Logan admitting the videotaped testimony of a witness who was not able to come to court to be cross-examined.
