Harrisburg mayor: Proposed budget riddled with errors
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The mayor of Pennsylvania’s cash-strapped capital won’t sign a city council-approved budget, saying it’s riddled with errors that would make it nearly $4 million out of balance.
Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson says the council underfunded the police and fire departments and puts the city at risk of not having enough fuel for its emergency vehicles.
Thompson said Thursday the $56 million budget is filled with mistakes of at least $3.9 million.
The mayor can veto the budget entirely, use a line-item veto or let it pass without her signature. She has until Tuesday to act.
The deeply indebted city was forced to push back some payments last year amid a budget crunch. In December it was accepted into a state program for financially distressed municipalities.
