Ohio’s first Polar Plunge of 2011 to benefit Special Olympics of Ohio will be at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at Mosquito Lake State Park.

Registration is now being accepted. Those who don’t want to participate in the plunge still can be part of the Too Chicken to Plunge activity.

Plunge participants are asked to obtain at least $75 in monetary pledges (or $50 for students) and then jump or crawl into the frigid waters of Mosquito Lake to earn their pledges.

Too Chicken to Plunge participants are asked to raise a minimum of $30. They will be awarded a Too Chicken to Plunge T-shirt.

Registration information and forms are available on the Internet at sooh.org or by calling 614-239-7050.

All Mosquito Lake activities, with the exception of the actual Plunge, are at the Cortland Family Moose Center. The plunge is at the Mosquito Lake bay between the beach and marina.

Pre-registration and early check-in for those already registered is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 21. Day-of-event registration and check-in will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A costume contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.

A post-plunge party will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

It is one of 11 plunges across the state.
