Judge to decide if alleged FBI biter stays in jail
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A federal judge must decide whether a western Pennsylvania man will stay jailed on charges he bit two FBI agents while they wrestled for his loaded gun.
A federal magistrate on Friday said 21-year-old Emerson Begolly, of Natrona Heights, should be released to a halfway house. But prosecutors say he’s too dangerous, though their appeal filed earlier this week contains no new information about why they believe that.
Instead, the appeal to be heard today merely repeats testimony from last week’s detention hearing that led to the halfway house ruling.
Begolly allegedly attacked the agents when they tried to question him in a parked car while others searched his divorced parents’ homes Jan. 4. Those search warrants remain sealed, but testimony indicates agents sought clues about anti-Semitic and pro-terrorist Internet posts credited to Begolly.
