women’s top 25
Marquette 69, No. 6 West Virginia 54
MILWAUKEE
Angel Robinson scored 18 points and Marquette went on an 11-0 midway through the second half just after coach Terri Mitchell was hit in the head to upset West Virginia. The Mountaineers (16-1, 3-1 Big East) watched Marquette snap the nation’s longest winning streak despite getting 15 points from Liz Repella. No. 3 Duke (15-0) and Florida Gulf Coast (12-0) are the last remaining undefeated women’s teams in Division I. Mitchell was hit in the head by a loose ball early in the second half with Marquette (14-3, 2-2) trailing by two and eventually left the court. When she returned 11 minutes later, Marquette led by double digits to give her second win in 18 tries over a top 10 opponent. Sarina Simmons scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half and Tatiyiana McMorris added 12 as the Golden Eagles took control with assistant Cara Consuegra running the team. Mitchell was hit in the head with 16:37 left and fell backward into her bench, where her assistants caught her. After a delay of several minutes, play resumed with Mitchell appearing unable to focus on the bench. She stayed there until the next media timeout, when she left the court slowly under her own power, and didn’t return until 3:10 left. When back, she burst out in a big smile and looked much more alert as Consuegra continued coaching
