1935: Aviator Amelia Earhart begins an 18-hour trip from Honolulu to Oakland, Calif., that makes her the first woman to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean.

1943: The United States and Britain sign treaties relinquishing extraterritorial rights in China.

1986: Atty. Don L. Hanni Jr., chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, says he will seek re-election to the chairmanship, reversing a decision he had announced several months earlier.

A gunman described about 25 years old, well-dressed and calm robs the Home Savings and Loan Co.’s South Side branch of an undetermined amount of cash.

1971: A 45-year-old Georgia man, John Wilder, whom police say was linked to Youngstown’s underworld, is found slain near his parked car in the 1200 block of Market Street, near the Rayco Auto Service Store.

A three-alarm fire in a woodworking shop of the Acorn Lumber Co. at 525 Williamson Avenue destroys the shop, machinery and finished products, with damage estimated at $20,000.

A 16-year-old North Side youth is picked up by city juvenile bureau officers, accused of making false bomb threats to Rayen School.

1961: Youngstown Mayor Frank R. Franko threatens to turn city bus service over to a new operator if the Youngstown Transit Co. does not comply within five days with a city order to make adjustments in its bookkeeping procedures.

Sheriff Ray T. Davis is tightening up on activities of some of his runners and trusties after it is reported that one slipped out during the night to buy six pints of wine.

1936: H.A. Roemer, president of Sharon Steel Hoop. Co., is expected to be president of the new company that will result from Steel Hoop’s purchase of stock in the Pittsburgh Steel Co.

Youngstown Law Director Vern B. Thomas says the board of education may be forced to provide shoes and clothing necessary for children of compulsory school age to attend school.
