No. 1 Duke beats AAC rival Terps

DURHAM, N.C.

Kyle Singler had 25 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, and No. 1 Duke beat Maryland 71-64 on Sunday night to extend its winning streak to 25 games.

Nolan Smith added 18 points on 5-of-18 shooting for the Blue Devils (15-0, 2-0 ACC). They overcame 17 turnovers and shot 40 percent to extend their best start since 2005-06.

Jordan Williams had 23 points and 13 rebounds for his ninth straight double-double, and Cliff Tucker added 14 points for the Terrapins (10-5, 0-2).

No. 3 Kansas 67, Michigan 60, OT

ANN ARBOR, Mich.

Marcus Morris scored 22 points, and Kansas remained undefeated.

The Wolverines (11-5) rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit and scored the last six points of regulation to tie the game at 51. Zack Novak made a 3-pointer at the start of overtime to give Michigan its first lead of the game, but the Jayhawks (15-0) scored the next eight points, all by Morris and his twin brother Markieff.

No. 7 Villanova 72, No. 24 Cincinnati 61

VILLANOVA, Pa.

Corey Fisher scored 21 points and Maalik Wayns had 13 of his 15 in the second half as Villanova handed Cincinnati its first loss.

Fisher had 20 points and made all nine of his free throws in a dynamic first half for the Wildcats.

No. 11 Purdue 75, Iowa 52

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.

Ryne Smith scored 18 points to help Purdue to its 10th straight win.

Smith made a career-high six 3-pointers, surpassing his record of five set twice in the previous three games.

JaJuan Johnson had 16 points and four blocks for the Boilermakers.

BIG TEN

EVANSTON, Ill.

John Shurna scored 24 points to lead Northwestern to a 93-81 victory over Indiana.

The Wildcats raced to a 40-28 halftime lead behind Shurna, who had 13 points including three 3-pointers.

After falling behind by 24 points, Indiana (9-8, 0-4) got as close as 82-74 with 2:05 left on a layup by Victor Oladipo. But Drew Crawford hit a 3-point shot on Northwesterns next possession.

HORIZON

VALPARAISO, Ind.

Cory Johnson scored 20 points as Valparaiso defeated Cleveland State 64-58.

No other players scored in double figures for the Crusaders (12-5, 4-1 Horizon), but Howard Little had 11 rebounds, and Jay Harris scored nine points off the bench as Valparaiso’s reserves outscored Cleveland State’s 19-2.

Trevon Harmon led the Vikings with 20 points.

MAC

ATHENS, Ohio

Antonio Ballard scored 26 points, hauled in 12 rebounds, and played all 55 minutes as Miami (Ohio) outlasted Ohio 92-88 in three overtimes.

The score was tied 16 times. Twelve lead changes took place before the Redhawks took the lead for good, on Orlando Williams’ 3-pointer with 29 seconds left.

W. Michigan 63, Cent. Michigan 56, OT

KALAMAZOO, Mich.

Demetrius Ward scored 21 points, including nine in overtime as Western Michigan won its MAC opener.

Ward was only 4 of 11 from the field but hit 12-of-14 free throws to help the Broncos (8-6) win their third straight.

Trey Zeigler had 22 points for the Chippewas (3-11) and sent the game into OT when he scored on a layup with two seconds left in regulation.
