Driver gets up to 15 years for NYC sidewalk crash

NEW YORK (AP) — A van driver who downed drinks before running over and killing a pregnant woman on a New York City sidewalk is headed to prison for seven to 15 years.

Keston Brown told a court at his sentencing Monday that he castigates himself every day over the March 2009 crash.

The 29-year-old was convicted last month of manslaughter. He was acquitted of a more serious aggravated vehicular homicide charge that carried a potential 25-year prison term.

The grocery story repairman acknowledged drinking beer and a cognac before getting behind the wheel of his work van. But he said he lost control of the van because of engine problems.

The wreck killed Ysemy Ramos on her third wedding anniversary, along with her unborn child. A friend of hers was hurt.
