Scouting leaders recognized for service

HERMITAGE, PA.

Chief Kiondashawa District Scout leaders gathered at Hickory United Methodist Church on Nov. 11 for an annual dinner hosted by Cub Scout Pack 5. Many Scouting units were represented and received awards at the event, coordinated by Brad Parola, district executive.

As part of the 100th anniversary of Scouting celebration, guest speakers, some of whom have been involved in the Scouting program for 70 years, shared memories of those years.

The evening included the presentation of prestigious awards to Scout leaders in recognition of their work and dedication to Scouting

In recognition of their noteworthy service to area youth through Scouting and service to the community, Jill Blance of Hermitage and Cliff Hovis of Grove City, Pa., were the recipients of the District Award of Merit for 2010, the highest award a district Scout leader can receive. They were selected for the honor by Todd Fencyk and his nominating committee.

Blance is Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 5 and a Webelos Den leader. She holds many Scouting positions within the district and is the webmaster for the Chief Kiondashawa website.

Hovis, a former den leader, has been a Scoutmaster for Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 76 for the past 10 years. He was one of the founders of Troop 76, which has continued to grow during his tenure. For the past three years he has served as district chairman.

Jim Scrivens, Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 78 in Hadley, received the Cub Scout Leader of the Year award; Mike Metelsky, Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 83 in Mercer, received the Boy Scout Leader of the Year Award; and Dulce Bayer of Venture Crew 76 in Hermitage received the Crew Adviser of the Year award.

Ron and Glenna Addison, owners of The Hub in Greenville, who sponsor the District Pinewood Derby Race, were recognized for their years of support and dedication to the Chief Kiondashawa District and the Scouts.
