Anna Augustine, who was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Youngstown, and has lived on the West Side all her life, celebrated her 90th birthday Jan. 1, 2011.
Her parents were the late Rose and Nick Fedina and she had two brothers Mike and Metro, who are deceased.
In the 1940s she cleaned strawberries at the big Isaly’s on Mahoning Avenue for 2 cents a quart, and then she worked as a waitress at Woolworth’s downtown.
After the war she married Frank Augustine of Greenville, Pa., who died in 1971. The couple had two children, Martha and Frank. Their grandchildren are Tony, Eddie, Mikie, Donnie, Frankie and Danielle. The family includes seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Augustine and her mother gardened and grew most of what the family ate. They also canned fruits and vegetables for winter use and they never let anyone go hungry.
