Cardinals suffer two losses at Holiday Classic

The boys basketball team competed in the Holiday Classic at Poland High School Dec. 27 and lost to Fitch, 38-36 on a shot with just 3.3 seconds left in the contest.

Leading the Cardinals were Jake Ferrier with 14 points and six rebounds and Danny Campolito with nine points.

The Cardinals were down by 15 in the second quarter against Boardman at the Holiday Classic Dec. 29. They made a run to take the lead in by five with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

But turnovers down the stretch proved costly, as Canfield fell 55-52.

Leading the Cardinals were Campolito with 26 points and Ryan Abraham with eight points and four assists.

Canfield bowlers win tournament

The Canfield girls bowling team went 3-0 to win the Holiday High School Bowling Tournament at Camelot Lanes on Dec. 30. The Cards defeated Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, Hubbard and Boardman to earn the team championship. In the boys’ competition, Canfield’s Tyler Frklich rolled a 667 series to win the individual championship.

Calling all baseball players

The Canfield Baseball Club is registering baseball and softball players for Spring 2011 play. Registration is only online at www.canfieldbaseball.com. The deadline to register is Feb. 15.

Canfield hockey drops two

In the Steel Valley high school hockey invitational Sunday at the Ice Zone, the Canfield Cardinals took early 1-0 leads in games against Avon and North Royalton, only to see those leads disappear and fall late in the third period. The Cards were defeated 2-1 against Avon and 3-2 by North Royalton, giving up a the winning goal with just 18 seconds left in the game.

Canfield’s goaltending was solid with Roger Geiser saving 27 on 29 shots in the Avon game. Dylan Williams registered 24 saves on 27 shots. The Canfield defense played strong, led by Nick Carney, Joe Geiser and Scott Schilling. The offense mustered only three goals on the day, two by Riley Emery and one by Ryan Ohara. Schilling, Emery, Joe Geiser and Roger Geiser picked up assists.

Cardinals get first win in Blue South division

The Canfield Cardinals hockey team won its first GCHSHL Blue South division hockey game of the season 11-0 over Garfield Heights Dec. 29.

Senior Kyle Bassett had two goals and two assists, Joe Geiser added two goals and two assists and Riley Emery scored four goals. Nick Carney added a goal, along with Bryan Clark and Tim Fernstrom. Tyler English, Josh Tancer, Chris Vouvalis, Scott Schilling and Sean Meditz chipped in with an assist each. Roger Geiser stopped all 12 shots in the net for the win. Canfield improved to 3-9-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in league play.

Curbstone Coaches announce speaker lineup

The Curbstone Coaches will resume its Monday meetings in January, plus host its annual “All-league High School Football Banquet on a Sunday. The group meets at noon the Blue Wolf Catering Center on Lockwood Blvd. in Boardman.

On Jan. 10, the speaker will be Joe DeRosa, retired NBA referee and now a 2010/2011 college basketball referee. Former YSU and NFL kicker Paul McFadden will be the speaker on Jan. 17 and Major League Baseball umpire Wally Bell will be featured Jan. 24. On Jan 30, the group will host its annual all-league high school banquet at 6:30 p.m. at the Georgetown. YSU head football coach Eric Wolford will be the featured speaker.
