Carley Johnston chose to celebrate her fifth birthday on Dec. 23 with story time and crafts at the Poland Library. During craft time, she was hard at work assembling her paper reindeer antlers.

Even before Poland childrens’ librarian Amanda Kollar asked it, she knew it was a silly question.

“Do you know what holiday is coming up?” she asked readers attending the Fun for 4’s and 5’s story time on Dec. 23.

Most answered with a squeal of “Christmas!” although a few added exclamations of “Santa!” and “Rudolph!”

Kollar planned a holiday story time that celebrated with Poland’s best Christmas books, holiday sing-alongs and a reindeer antler craft.

The reading of David Milgrim’s book “Santa Duck,” which profiles a duck who ends up being Santa’s helper after finding a Santa suit, had many of the children laughing loudly at the absurdity of the yellow duck in red and white. The story time included many counting games, which Kollar said would be important in preschool and kindergarten.

As the children settled in to create their reindeer antler craft, Carley Johnston celebrated her fifth birthday with star and circle-covered antlers.

Gene Mills watched as his grandsons, Mitchell and Garrett Bogan, wrestled with their antlers.

“The Poland library has an outstanding program. We’re here every week,” he said as he left with his grandkids,
