Girl Scout troop No. 301 has been busy around the community earning its “year of service” award.

The troop with members from Austintown, Canfield, McDonald, Mineral Ridge, Girard and Youngstown worked to earn the award by raking leaves for an elderly Austintown couple on Make a Difference Day Oct. 23, collecting clothing during Goodwill’s Good Turn Day in November and sending handmade Christmas cards to the United Service Organization for military personal.

But the service the troop is most proud of is its participation in the Adopt a Family project. During December, troop members used $500 of the money they earned during last year’s cookie sales and purchased clothes, toys and gas cards. Each girl donated hygiene items and paper goods to help brighten Christmas for one local family through the Niles Community Center.

The members of the troop took great pride in their efforts and can’t wait to do it again next year.

In the meantime, the Girl Scouts are focusing on selling 7,000 boxes of cookies.
