There is a sign at the entrance of the Canfield library that lays out the rules of their branch — “No food or drinks, no loud cell phone usage and no animals allowed.”

However, for the Tales to Tails reading event on Dec. 16, breaking the rule about animals for an hour was worth it.

In association with Humility of Mary’s K-9’s for Compassion volunteer program, Tales for Tales offers young readers the chance to read to registered therapy dogs to increase their literacy skills.

Kelly Long brought her two daughters to the event.

“My daughter, Reygan, has autism and I can see her excitement about reading change when she reads to Shadow. It’s a wonderful program and I’ve been bringing my girls here for a year. They love it so much.”

By Shadow the dog’s side for story time was her owner, Nanci Wolce, helping with words during story time and asking questions to the children.

Wolce shared praise for the Tales to Tails program.

“I’ve always been an animal person, and I love to volunteer. This program marries the two together so well. And mostly, Shadow and I just have a lot of fun,” she said.
