Texas panel re-examines arson execution case

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A panel in Texas is hearing from fire experts as it re-examines the arson finding that sent a man to the death chamber seven years ago.

Cameron Todd Willingham was executed after he was convicted of setting the 1991 fire that killed his three young daughters at their home in Corsicana, about 60 miles south of Dallas.

Since then, questions have been raised about whether the arson finding was accurate.

The Texas Forensic Science Commission is taking another look at the case and began hearing today from a panel of experts. Commission Chairman John Bradley says no decision will be made Friday.

Willingham’s case has been pushed by the Innocence Project, a New York-based legal organization that specializes in wrongful conviction cases.

Prosecutors say Willingham was properly convicted.
