A last-minute surge of generosity by Mahoning County residents enabled the local Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign to exceed its $300,000 goal.

Maj. Lurlene-Kay M. Johnson, Mahoning County Area coordinator pro-tem, said that as of Tuesday, the 2010 Red Kettle Campaign had raised $301,307.

On Christmas Eve, the Salvation Army announced that it had not reached its goal.

Johnson said, however, after the red kettles were brought in, the community continued to send checks and assist with the fundraising effort, enabling the SA to exceed its goal.

“In my 23 years as an officer, I have never seen a community that has worked so hard to help the Salvation Army reach its goal. I continue to be amazed by the support of the Salvation Army in Mahoning County,” said Johnson, divisional secretary for program for the Salvation Army’s Northeastern Ohio Division.

Because of the county residents’ hard work and dedication, the Salvation Army will be able to continue to serve those most in need in the community, said Becky Keck, Students Motivated by the Arts director and a member of the Mahoning County Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Most of the money raised is used to cover the SA’s distribution costs, give out toys and food vouchers, and for social-service programs for 2011 that enable the organization to continue to help eligible people with clothing, food and utility costs, Johnson said.

The Salvation Army works in conjunction with a variety of other agencies, individuals and faith-based organizations, said Johnson, adding that she’s thankful to the Toys for Tots program for donating most of the toys.

“This community is so generous, and they have been wonderful volunteers for us. I want the community to know we’re grateful for all they’ve done,” she added.
