University of Toledo offers taxi debit cards to students

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — University of Toledo is selling special debit cards for use in taxis, with possible discounts to encourage groups of students to explore their city.

The cards allow more than one student to take a cab without having to pay the usual fee for extra passengers.

The prepaid cards were first offered about two months ago. The school hopes the program will make art galleries, sporting events and other destinations more accessible from the university’s campus several miles west of downtown Toledo.

Larry Burns, university vice president for external affairs, tells The Blade newspaper the cards also make it an easier for students to take a cab home if they’ve been drinking.
