1896: An Austrian newspaper reports the discovery by German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen of a type of radiation later known as “X-rays.”

1925: Nellie T. Ross of Wyoming becomes the first female governor in U.S. history.

1949: In his State of the Union address, President Harry S. Truman labels his administration the Fair Deal.

1970: Joseph A. Yablonski, an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency of the United Mine Workers of America, is found murdered with his wife and daughter at their Clarksville, Pa. home. (UMWA President Tony Boyle and seven others are convicted in the killings.)

1986: Quarterback Dan Marino’s Miami Dolphins overcome an 18-point deficit for a come-from-behind victory over the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the American Football Conference playoffs.

The Mercer County Industrial Development Authority releases a report showing nearly $14 million in industrial revenue bonds were issued in 1985.

1971: A large contingent of city police is sent to the Mahoning County Jail to help control 10 inmates in the maximum security cell block who went on a rampage.

Martin J. Hughes, Youngstown native and Ohio director of the Communication Workers of America, is named Ohio director off industrial relations by Gov.-elect John J. Gilligan.

1961: Neither city police nor Sheriff Ray T. Davis is taking credit for a raid that shut down a barbut gambling den at 28 South Avenue.

Weather Observer Edwin Copeland at Millport reports 1960 was the second driest and yet one of the snowiest years in this area in the 67 years that records have been kept in Columbiana County.
