Ohio's Boehner optimistic on relations with Obama

CINCINNATI (AP) — John Boehner is taking over the House speakership optimistic about his relationship with Barack Obama, even as Republicans ready challenges to the president on key issues.

The West Chester, Ohio, congressman tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that he and the president know each other pretty well and that “we get along fine.”

Boehner added this morning: “I really don’t know what to expect from the president, but I have told him that ’I’ll always be open and upfront with you.’ “

House Republicans are expected to seek a repeal of Obama’s health-care overhaul and to cut some programs. Boehner says many people are watching the Republicans and expect them to deliver on their promises.

He spoke in the speaker’s office in Washington before the new Congress was called to order this afternoon.
