Man on trial for crimes committed in 2003

YOUNGSTOWN — A 42-year-old man is on trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for crimes he is accused of committing in 2003, and DNA evidence will be the focal point to prove his guilt, prosecutors say.

Sammie Smith, who lists the Mahoning County jail as his address, is charged with burglary, three counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery.

He is on trial in the courtroom of Judge Maureen Sweeney of county common pleas court. Opening statements were today, and the trial continues Wednesday.
