Ninety-five years ago, Campbell — then known as East Youngstown — was a tinderbox of labor unrest, and on Jan. 6, 1916, it exploded. Entire blocks were engulfed in flames, hundreds of families were left homeless, dozens of businesses were left in ashes. Gov. James M. Cox dispatched 1,000 troops, some armed with machine guns, to restore order. “What started as a strike [against Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.] for an increase in wages ... degenerated into a brutal riot that cost the village of East Youngstown a million and a half dollars in loss,” the Jan. 8 Vindicator reported.
