Pizza boxes cause apartment fire on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN

Pizza boxes left on a lighted stovetop caused $15,000 in structure damage and $5,000 in content damage at a Brandywine Apartment complex at 3200 Canfield Road, Battalion Chief Rich Russo said.

Youngstown firefighters responded to a call at 3:44 p.m. Sunday and were able to contain the flames to one unit. There was water damage to the unit below.

Several apartment dwellers were treated for smoke inhalation, but no one was taken to the hospital.

Russo said the unit’s resident left pizza boxes on the stove then accidentally bumped a button turning the stove on and setting the boxes on fire. The flames later spread to the kitchen cupboards above.

“It could have gotten pretty nasty,” Russo said adding that crews were on the scene for a little over an hour.
