Mummers strut through Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA

Colorful costumes, strumming string bands and antics of clowns filled the broad avenues of the City of Brotherly Love for the annual Mummers Parade on New Year’s Day.

Dressed in elaborate costumes with feathers and sequins, the brigades strutted from South Philadelphia up Broad Street, the city’s main north-south thoroughfare, stopping to perform elaborate routines for the thousands of onlookers lining the route.

Many groups took the inspiration for their costumes from other cultures or adopted historical, animal or other motifs. One brigade filled the avenue with green costumed hordes pumping matching frog-eyed green umbrellas into the air as they strutted along.
