No longer a commissioner, Bing to run for new post
LISBON
Columbiana County Commissioner Dan Bing ended one part of his career as 2010 ended and starts a new one today.
Bing, a Democrat, ended his four-year term as commissioner Friday and is working on a plan he doesn’t want to detail in depth — for now.
He lost his bid for re-election, beaten in the Republican wave last November that was the reverse of the Democratic victory he was in four years ago.
He was in his office Tuesday sorting through a pile of paperwork he won’t be needing anymore.
When he ran for the commissioner post, he said, “I was asked to run by a number of people.”
He is running for another office now, but he doesn’t want to say which one.
When he initially was asked to run for commissioner four years ago, “I said no,” he said.
Someone asked him to pray about his decision. He did, and he said the answer was that he should run.
Working with the other two county commissioners, Democrat Penny Traina and Republican Jim Hoppel, was great, he said.
The board divided duties and responsibilities and kept one another informed of what was going on.
Bing was the commissioners’ representative on the county’s plan to create a 911 wireless program that will be able to locate people who need help anywhere in the county. There were problems creating the system, but he said the system is almost ready.
Bing worked in 1980 in Cleveland on what is now radio station WMMS. He came back here, he said, “because I married a girl from Lisbon.”
He returned to the county in 1983. He still spins oldies on WHOT AM 1490 in East Liverpool.
He and his wife, Jane, also do work for the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board involving mental health and disabilities. He makes sure the clients are getting payments due them.
The Bings have six children and 10 grandchildren and another grandchild coming in mid-February.
