St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oakhill Ave., will celebrate its centennial this year with a host of events.
On May 24, 1911, the Rev. Charles Martin of Cleveland founded St. Patrick Church in Youngstown. In 1911, Youngstown was part of the Cleveland Roman Catholic Diocese. The parish’s history of spiritual leadership and community involvement includes three schools, St. Patrick Catholic School, New Hope Academy and Summit Academy in the building adjacent to the church.
The parish itself consists of some 682 households, which accounts for 1,278 people. The parish grounds have expanded in the past 20 years and include a one-acre urban garden plot that is “farmed” by the Oak Hill 4-H Clovers and more than 20 people from the parish, neighborhood and Summit Academy.
The Rev. Edward Noga is the ninth pastor of the parish. Fred Kurz is the centennial chairman.
