YOUNGSTOWN

The late Dr. Earnest Perry, a noted surgeon and community leader, will be honored at the fourth annual Diversity Leadership Recognition Celebration at 6 p.m. March 31 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

A lifelong resident of Youngstown, Perry was a member of the National Medical Association, a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, NAACP and The American Cancer Society. He also was a former member of the YSU Board of Trustees. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the first Friends of the University Award (1997) at YSU, Doctor of Humans Letters (March 1997) and the 2008 YSU Black Alumni Chapter Centennial Reunion Award for Excellence in Medicine.

In 2008, he and his wife, Doris, established a significant endowment for minority students attending Youngstown State University.

Dr. Perry died last summer.

Other honorees include:

Community Leadership – Beatitude House, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and Robert Faulkner.

Campus Leadership – Alfred Bright, Arlene Floyd, and L.J. Tessier; and student leaders (Leaders of Tomorrow) – Alma Ciriello, Darian Scott and Terrell Wesley.

YSU President Cynthia E. Anderson will be the keynote speaker. Anderson is the first woman, first Mahoning Valley resident and first YSU graduate to serve as YSU president.

Proceeds from the event will fund student scholarships through an endowment that has been established with the YSU Foundation.

Sponsorship levels are Trendsetter in Diversity ($5,000), Centennial Leaders ($2,500), Legacy Leaders ($1,500) and Diversity Circle of Friends (up to $500).
