Canfield High swimmer Gavin Trebilcock finished in second place in the 200-yard individual medley race on Saturday during the Division I state swimming meet at the C.T. Branin Natorium.
Trebilcock also finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke (59.13).
Trebilcock swam one of his best times, 1:52.99, for the best individual finish of his career. Little Miami senior Steven Zimmerman (1:49.39) repeated as state champion.
Trebilcock’s older brother, Garrett, placed third in the 200 IM last year. Gavin will join his brother on Ohio State’s swim team next year.
Canfield’s boys teams scored 30 points to finish 20th. Boardman earned 25 points for 23rd place.
Boardman sophomore Ryan Bailey finished fifth in the 100 butterfly race. His time was 51.45 seconds. Bailey also finished 16th in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 59.76.
“Ryan Bailey is a sophomore so for him to finish fifth in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet is a great accomplishment,” Boardman coach Terry O’Halloran said. “He’s already setting his sights for next year and will work hard to win a state championship.
“He does everything right, in and out of the pool,” O’Halloran said.
The Spartans’ 200 medley relay team (Bailey, Steven Brooks, Alex Downie and Steven Moss) came in 12th with a time of 1:38.25. Canfield’s team of Trebilcock, senior Ryan O’Malley, senior Drew Wellham and junior Mark Dalvin finished 13th.
Boardman’s Ashley Aldan finished 16th in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:07.34.
“We’re also pleased with Ashley returning to state to finish 16th,” said O’Halloran, adding that Aldan qualified for state competition as a freshman and a sophomore.
