Lela Decembly of Youngstown loves to perform.
“It’s fun, and I like doing it,” she said. “But I do it not to put on a show. I do it for the glory of God. I like dancing and singing for the Lord.”
Decembly, 26, sang and performed a mime routine Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church on Sherwood Avenue.
The church has has a talent show annually for the past five years. This is Decembly’s fourth year participating.
The talent show concluded Black History Month for the church. Each Sunday during February, the church sponsored events to teach people about and celebrate the accomplishments of black people.
“The younger kids learn black history in school, but they didn’t teach it to those from my generation,” said Rose Wilkins of Youngstown, a Beulah church member and co-organizer of the black history events.
“It’s great to celebrate our culture,” she said.
Other events at the church this month included a discussion about the Negro [baseball] League, and last week, people dressed as their favorite black historical figure.
