Honor students receive scholastic art awards


YOUNGSTOWN

Local students were recognized for their artistic talents during a ceremony Jan. 29 at the Chestnut Room at Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

During the event the 2011 Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards were presented to honor students in grades 7-12 from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties.

Recipients of special awards and their high schools are as follows:

Stacy Rubinic of Hubbard, the YSU Scholarship and Gold Key Art Portfolio Award.

Che’rie Berry, Newton Falls, the Gold Key Photography Portfolio Award.

Nicholas Perry, Boardman, the Mario Bertolini Portfolio Award.

Austin Mraz, the Steel Valley Art Teachers Association 3-D Award.

Alyssa Lytle, the Patricia Williams Award.

The five American Vision winners were Angela Drohn of Crestview High School; Alexis El-Khouri and Amber Henik, both of Austintown Fitch High School; Maggie Kolovich of Newton Falls High School; and Lucas Riley of Pymatuning Valley High School

The works of the regional Gold Key and American Vision winners and Gold Key Portfolio nominees will be sent to New York to compete in the national competition.

The students’ art was exhibited through Feb. 4 at the McDonough Museum of Art on the YSU campus. The exhibit was sponsored in part by Akron Children’s Hospital.

The art awards program is part of a national exhibit sponsored by the education publishers, Scholastic Inc., New York.
