Students at Watson Elementary strayed from the regular school dress code for a night, as they showed up in saddle shoes, poodle skirts, blue jeans and leather jackets for the PTA’s Sock Hop on Feb. 4.

“Tonight is all about pure fun for our students,” explained event chair Jaclyn Iagulli. “We’ve tried this event at Frank Ohl and the middle school in previous years, but we’ve found that the kids love celebrating in their own space more than anything else.”

Entry to the evening dance was by donation only, and any money raised from the event benefited the PTA Carnival at Watson in March.

A contest for best costume ran throughout the evening, and line dances, limbo and dance contests were provided by local musician DJ Dominic during the event. Dominic Trimboli, a 1995 Fitch graduate, knew the right songs to get the party started.

Along with his other activities, DJ Dominic coordinated a “Simon Says” contest that lasted for 20 minutes. The game became increasingly complicated as the Watson students followed directions in the game with precision. At one point, the students were standing on one leg, raising a right hand and waving with a left.

“They’re too good. This game might go on forever,” said DJ Dominic with a laugh.

The game did end, but with seven students claiming the top spot.

“What can I say? Here at Watson, the kids are really good listeners,” said principal Shelia Palombo as she celebrated with the winners.
