Submit information for Lenten services

Lent, a season of spiritual renewal, begins Ash Wednesday, March 9. Forty days is a traditional number of discipline, devotion and preparation in the Bible. Lent also lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays.

A listing of Ash Wednesday services and other Lenten programs will be published March 5. Deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

World Day of Prayer

A World Day of Prayer service is planned at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Catholic Church, 5235 South Ave., where the Rev. Joseph Fata will deliver the message.

The program is sponsored by the World Day of Prayer USA Committee.

The program, “How Many Loaves Have You?” was written by the women of Chile, who have experienced an earthquake and tsunami. Chile also was in the news with the rescue of 33 miners.

Ruth Abbott and Rich Morgan of WKBN-TV will present a background of the country.

Larry and Karen Davis will lead the music.

The women of St. Luke will host a light luncheon after the service.

Community residents may participate in the ecumenical service.

Concert planned

Quiet Love will present a concert at 7 p.m. March 9 in fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard, 22 Westview Ave.

The music ministry’s mission is to communicate Christ’s love through dramatic interpretation and testimony.

Society meeting

“A Latin Priest’s Experience of the Eastern Church” will be addressed by the Rev. Shawn Conoboy of St. Charles Borromeo Church during a meeting of the Society of St. John Chrysostom at 7 p.m. March 8 at the church, 7345 Westview Drive.

The society is an ecumenical organization of Catholic and Orthodox clergy and laity.

Women’s Day

Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 718 Albert St., will have its annual Women’s Day at the 11 a.m. service Sunday.

The theme is “Courageous Women — Called by God, Serving Him in Faith.”

The guest speaker will ber the Rev. Glynis Herns, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Chairwomen are Tawanna Wright and Davene Smith. The Rev. Amariah McIntosh is pastor.

Play at Grace AME

The Women’s Day Committee of Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW, will present the play, “Behold I Stand at the Door and Knock,” at 4 p.m. March 5.

The program will be followed by “feast of salads.” The cost is $10 for adults and children 12 and older. Children 3 to 11 are $5. For tickets, call the church at 330-394-6270.

Jewish/Christian Studies/North will discuss the role of sin and death in Jewish, Christian and Islam during a dialogue at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Temple El-Emeth, 3970 Logan Way.

The Rev. Nick Mager, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, will speak on Protestant traditions.

The male chorus of New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will present a praise celebration at 6 p.m. Sunday with the theme, “Let the Praise Begin.”

Participants will be male choruses of these churches: Greater Friendship Baptist, Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal, St. Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal, Mount Gilead, Mount Zion and Four Grace.

Events on AIDS

Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., will mark National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS with special musical, prayer service and educational workshop.

On March 6, there will be special Sunday morning worship services related to AIDS issues. Pastor J. Dwayne Heard will deliver a message at 10:45 a.m. to raise the level of AIDS awareness.

There also will be a concert at 5 p.m. that day.

HIV screening will be available.

A prayer service also is planned at noon March 9 at Mahoning County Courthouse Rotunda, 120 Market St.

An HIV Prevention Forum will be at 10 a.m. March 12 at the church’s EB Family Life Center, 7 S. Garland Ave.

There will be speakers, entertainment, breakout sessions for targeted populations and HIV screening.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Youngstown City Health District will provide technical assistance at events.

All programs are free and open to all.

Ancient rituals

Do you have an interest in the ancient rituals of the Eastern Orthodox Church? Have you ever wondered about the meanings behind them? The Rev. Andrew Gromm offers a weekly lesson at 6 p.m. Thursdays at St. Michael Orthodox Church, 127 Steel St.

The same lesson is repeated at 4 p.m. Fridays. These lessons will focus on the liturgy’s origins from the first to fourth century, and beyond this era.
