Falling ice closes busy interstate bridge in Ohio

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Falling ice is creating a mess on a busy interstate highway bridge in northern Ohio.

Highway officials in Toledo shut down the Interstate 280 bridge this morning because chunks of ice were falling from the bridge’s steel cables.

That left traffic backed up on a span that connects the Ohio Turnpike with I-75 and is a heavily used truck route. At least one southbound lane has since been reopened.

The Blade newspaper of Toledo reports that a research team has been studying icing problems on the bridge.
