1866: Lucy B. Hobbs becomes the first woman to graduate from a dental school, the Ohio College of Dental Surgery in Cincinnati.

1911: Composer Gustav Mahler, despite a fever, conducts the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in what turns out to be his final concert. (He dies the following May.)

1965: Black Muslim leader and civil rights activist Malcolm X, 39, is shot to death at the Audubon Ballroom in New York by assassins identified as members of the Nation of Islam.

1972: President Richard M. Nixon begins his historic visit to China as he and his wife, Pat, arrive in Beijing.

1986: Larry Wu-tai Chin, the first American found guilty of spying for China, kills himself in a Virginia jail.

1986: Facing growing concern that the Lake Milton dam could burst, the Youngstown Parks and Recreation Department agrees to breach the aging dam.

1971: Dr. Edith G.
