Wrestling teams compete at sectionals today

The high school wrestling season started postseason competition this weekend, as area teams participated in sectional tournaments Friday and today.

Austintown and Boardman competed at the Division I sectional at Fitch High School. Preliminary matches began Friday and the finals are slated for tonight. Other teams at the sectional are Chardon, Howland, Hudson, Lakeside, Madison, Roosevelt, Solon, Stow and Twinsburg.

The top four wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to next week’s district tournament at Mentor.

In Division II, Canfield and Poland are among the field at the West Branch sectional tournament. Other squads include Alliance, Crestwood, Field, Hubbard, Louisville, Marlington, Salem, Southeast and West Branch.

Get tickets to the basketball games

The Poland High School athletic department will begin pre-selling tickets Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Poland at Canfield game scheduled for Feb. 25 and the March 4 sectional tournament basketball game played at Boardman High School. For more information, call 330-757-7021.

Poland diver Melillo qualifies for state

Poland sophomore Celia Melillo placed fourth at Wednesday’s Division II district diving meet at Cleveland State University. Melillo’s finish qualified her for next weekend’s state meet in Canton.

Poland girls beat East Liverpool

Abbie Frank’s 19 points and eight rebounds led the Bulldogs (12-7) to a 47-43 win over East Liverpool. Adriana Sikora made 10 rebounds and five steals while Maura Bobby scored nine points.
