Wrestling teams compete at sectionals

The high school wrestling season started postseason competition this weekend, as area teams participated in sectional tournaments Friday and today.

Austintown and Boardman competed at the Division I sectional at Fitch High School. Preliminary matches began Friday and the finals are slated for tonight. Other teams at the sectional are Chardon, Howland, Hudson, Lakeside, Madison, Roosevelt, Solon, Stow and Twinsburg.

The top four wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to next week’s district tournament at Mentor High School.

In Division II, Canfield and Poland are among the field at the West Branch sectional tournament. Other squads include Alliance, Crestwood, Field, Hubbard, Louisville, Marlington, Salem, Southeast and West Branch.

The top four wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to next week’s district tournament at Akron Firestone.

Cardinals selected for all-league teams

The Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League announced recent all-league teams, which included three players from the Canfield Cardinals.

Senior defenseman Joe Geiser was selected to the All-Blue Conference second team and second team Blue South division.

Geiser has scored 19 goals and added 25 assists this season, adding to his three-year career total of 112 points.

Senior forward Riley Emery was selected first-team Blue South. Emery has recorded school records with 51 goals this season, 125 career goals and 192 career points in four varsity seasons.

Junior goaltender Roger Geiser was selected to the second-team Blue South. He has 476 saves this season with an 89 percent save percentage. Geiser, in three varsity seasons, is 137 saves away from being the OHSAA career leader in saves.

Soccer squads impress on and off the field

Canfield High School’s boys and girls varsity soccer teams were recently accorded “All-Ohio” academic honors by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) for their classroom performance during their 2010-2011 seasons.

To qualify for this recognition each team attained a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0 while competing on the field.

The boys team earned a 16-3 record, were sectional champions and district runners-up this past season. The girls team earned an 11-5-3 record and were sectional champions this past season.

Both squads are coached by Phil Simone, with Joe Fusillo assisting with the boys squad and Nikki Sorice assisting with the girls team.

Emery scores three in win over Brunswick

The Canfield Cardinals hockey team defeated Brunswick 6-5 on Feb. 9.

Riley Emery scored three times (51 on the season) and added an assist to lead Canfield. Nick Carney picked up a goal and two assists and Joe Geiser added a goal and an assist. Ryan O’Hara scored the final tally as Kyle Bassett and Bryan Clark picked up assists in the regular season finale for the Cards.

Dine with the Diamondback Booster Club

The Diamondback Booster Club will host a fundraising dinner to benefit the Canfield High School boys baseball team Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Michael’s Family Life Center.

The cost for the dinner is $10 for adults and $7 for children under 10 and includes chicken, potatoes, green beans, pasta, meatballs, salad, dessert and beverages. Tickets are available prior to the event as well as the day of the dinner. Carryouts will be available. For tickets, call Joe Reinthaler at 330-540-7926.
