The Goddard School’s Community Games on Feb. 5 invited toddlers through their doors as normal kids and let them leave as superheroes in training.

In an event open to students and the general public, Goddard promoted its passion for the power of play with a superhero-themed exploration of math, language, art and imagination.

“Our guests enter and they get a superhero cape and earn their ‘powers’ by learning skills in math and language. This theme really is important because we do believe that learning gives our kids amazing powers,” said Goddard’s director, Luba Everitt.

After earning their capes, guests flew to stations exploring science, language, art and imagination through play. The “Power of Science” room offered guests the chance to play with ‘goop’ made with glue and corn starch, and watch a vinegar and baking soda volcano erupt.

In “Power of Imagination,” the guests explored a makeshift animal hospital where they could bandage and give IV’s to plush dogs.

It was Goddard’s first Community Games event, and Everitt considers the attempt a success.

“Our success isn’t in the big numbers. Reaching out to one family, and teaching one child about the power of play made all of our work worth it.”
