Canfield-Beaver Local makeup scheduled

Canfield will play host to Beaver Local in a girls varsity basketball makeup game on Friday night.

The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.

Brad Smith inducted

Brad Smith was inducted into the Univ. of Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

Smith is a graduate of Chaney High and plays for the New York Jets.

He holds 69 football records at Missouri, Big 12 and NCAA.

He passed for over 8,000 yards and ran for over 4,000 yards in his career.

The Mineral Ridge-McDonald pink zone basketball game will be played Wednesday.

The United States Hockey League announced three weekly award winners.

Forward Tucker Brockett of the Chicago Steel was named the offensive player of the week; defenseman Joel Benson of the Chicago Steel was selected the defensive player of the week; and Ryan McKay of the Green Bay Gamblers earned the goaltender of the week citation.

Brockett scored five points (3g, 2a) and posted a plus-four rating to help the Steel capture a pair of wins.

Fitch High’s Ali Tolich won the shot put (40-9) and the weight throw (47-8) at an indoor track meet.

Tolich is ranked first in the state in both events.

The Fitch girls 4x200-meter relay team (Theresa Scott, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Jenna Yacovone) took second (1:48.46) and is ranked third in Ohio.

Also, Jen Shiley placed fifth in the 400-meters (60.20) and ninth in the 200-meters (26.78) while Gabby Figueroa was third in the weight throw (34-4).

Browns add Rhodes to coaching staff

CLEVELAND

Ray Rhodes has joined new Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur’s staff as a defensive assistant.

Rhodes, a former NFL head coach, has spent the past three seasons with the Houston Texans. Before that, he worked in Seattle with Browns president Mike Holmgren. Rhodes brings more than 30 years of pro coaching experience to Cleveland. He was a head coach in Philadelphia and Green Bay. Also, the team said Keith Gilbertson will be a senior offensive assistant after serving as the Browns director of pro personnel last year.

NASCAR to allow children in garage

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

NASCAR is become more kid-friendly this year by allowing children into the garage on race days.

The revision to the garage access policy will permit adults with approved credentials to bring their children into garages during the pre-race period on race days.

Each child will be issued a special credential. There is no minimum age requirement.

The policy announced Monday follows a relaxed dress code NASCAR implemented before the season. NASCAR will for the first time allow shorts, open-toed shoes, sleeveless blouses and skirts and dresses in the garage.

Vonn pulls out of ski worlds due to injury

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany

Lindsey Vonn has pulled out of her remaining events at the world championships to recuperate from her head injury.

The American made the announcement on her Facebook page Monday, saying her plan now “will be to take some time off and try to get 100 percent healthy again.”

She says she hopes to be healthy and fresh when the World Cup tour resumes at the end of the month in Are, Sweden.

Vonn sustained a mild concussion during training in Austria the week before worlds and was clearly not her normal self during her opening events.
