Ingalls, Philen deliver for YSU softball win

YSU junior Jordan Ingalls hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning forced extra innings and junior Kristen Philen had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Youngstown State softball team to a 6-5 victory over Kent State.
The Golden Flashes broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 advantage.
Senior Kristina Rendle singled down the left-field line with one out and scored on Ingalls’ first home run of the season to knot the game at 5-5.
With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Erin Gilmour was placed on second base as a pinch-runner and advanced to third on Samantha Snodgrass‘ sacrifice bunt. Gilmour then scored the game-winning run on Philen’s infield single.
Indoor track
GENEVA
The Lordstown High girl’s 4x400 relay team of JoHaana Morgan, Annalie Fitzgibbon, Sara Leamer and Rhianna Durrett took fourth place with a time of 4:25.7 in an indoor track meet. That time is a school record.
Also, the 4x800 relay squad of Courtney Beatty, Beth Linert, Hilary Minton and Katie Hartt placed fifth (12:00.7).
Morgan set the school record in the 400 dash (1:04.7).
Winter Deaflympics in Slovakia canceled
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia
The International Committee of Deaf Sports says the 17th Winter Deaflympics in Slovakia has been canceled because of a “comprehensive failure” of local organizers to deliver what they promised.
ICDS chief executive Tiffany Granfors said in a statement Sunday “we are heartbroken ... and we are working as hard as we can to mitigate the effect it will have on deaf athletes and deaf sport.”
On Friday, the committee announced the cancellation of the games scheduled for Feb. 18-26 in the High Tatras mountain range.
The organizers said they were not able to secure necessary funding.
Hantuchova wins Pattaya Open
PATTAYA, Thailand
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia claimed her first title in four years Sunday, defeating Sara Errani of Italy 6-0 6-2 in the Pattaya Open final.
The fourth-seeded Slovak collected her fourth career title and first since Linz in 2007. Hantuchova improved to 3-1 against Errani.
Hantuchova used her forehand to pressure Errani from start, racing to a 5-0 lead in the first set in just 20 minutes. She hit two set points into the net, but converted the third when Errani’s forehand flew long.
Errani got a break to start the second set, but was unable to maintain the momentum.
Soderling defends Rotterdam title
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands
Top-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to defend his title at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament on Sunday.
Soderling broke Tsonga’s serve to take a 5-3 lead in the deciding set, serving an ace to wrap up the win.
Soderling broke Tsonga’s first service game to take an early 2-0 lead, but the eighth-seeded Frenchman broke Soderling in the fifth game before three consecutive aces allowed him to tie the set at 3-3.
Soderling broke again in the eighth to take a 5-3 lead and then served out the set.
Deputy Daney takes Big A’s Lucky Stakes
NEW YORK
Deputy Daney held off Temecula Creek, the 3-5 favorite, by 11/4 lengths Sunday to capture the $58,800 Always Run Lucky Stakes at Aqueduct.
The 4-year-old gelding shot right to the front with Sheldon Russell aboard, opening up a six-length lead. Deputy Daney was all-out in deep stretch to secure his fifth win in 10 starts, paying $7.20, $3.70 and $2.10. Temecula Creek returned $2.50 and $2.10. Independence War paid $2.10 to show.
The time was 1:09.84 for the six furlongs on the fast track.
