YSU softball suffers two setbacks

The Youngstown State softball team opened its season with a pair of losses at the Phoenix Leadoff Classic.

The Penguins lost to Kent State, 9-1, and Elon, 4-3.

Kent State scored five unearned runs in the second inning and collected 10 hits.

Vicky Rumph doubled for YSU.

Elon scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning

Rumph and Caroline Krombach went 2-for-3.

YSU stranded 11 runners on base against Elon.

Curbstone Coaches

The Curbstone Coaches will meet Monday at noon at the Blue Wolf Banquet Center.

The guest speaker will be Marilyn O’Bruba, YSU Athletic Academic Advisor.

PBA Hubbard Open qualifier March 5

HUBBARD

The tournament qualifier for the PBA Central/East Region Hubbard Open will be March 5 at Bell-Wick Bowl.

Total pins after four games scratch will determine which one-in-seven receive entry to the PBA Hubbard Open. Entry fee for the qualifier which begins at 8 p.m. is $50. For more, call 330-534-1179.

The PBA Central/East Region Hubbard Open is March 18-20.

In conjunction with the event, a high school Baker tournament will be March 18, as well as a pro-am on March 19.

Women’s bowling

The 19th annual senior singles tournament of the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association will be March 26 at 2 p.m. and March 27 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Bell-Wick Bowl.

Entry fee is $17 for the five-division event. Forms, which are available at all bowling centers, must be returned before March 18.

Raiders unbeaten

The No. 8 ranked Univ. of Mount Union wrestling team clinched at least a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference title with a 47-0 win over Wilmington on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders are the nation’s only undefeated team at 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the OAC. They can clinch the OAC regular season crown outright with a win Tuesday against Baldwin-Wallace in the regular season finale.

Mount Union swept the seven contested matches against Wilmington (1-9, 0-5 OAC).

The best match was a rematch of last year’s OAC tournament final at 125 pounds as Mount Union’s Riki Reynolds, ranked No. 4 in the nation, defeated Donny Herrington, 5-4.

Haynesworth formally charged with assault

RESTON, Va.

Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been formally charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage incident earlier this month.

Fairfax County police say the 29-year-old Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on March 31.

The encounter that led to the charge occurred on Feb. 2. Police said a 38-year-old man told investigators he was assaulted by the driver of a pickup truck who was tailgating him. The driver was later identified as Haynesworth.

Coax Liberty wins Big A’s Dearly Precious

NEW YORK

Coax Liberty rallied to beat even-money favorite Breathoffreshheir by two lengths Saturday in the $63,700 Dearly Precious Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

Jostled in the early stages, Coax Liberty settled into fourth before launching her bid turning for home. She advanced widest of all to earn her third win in eight starts.
