Canfield wrestlers ranked
Three Canfield wrestlers have been projected to finish among the top 25 in the state in their respective weight classes by high school wrestling expert Brian Brakeman.
Canfield’s Rob Reed has been projected to finish third in the state in the 125-pound weight class. The senior finished fifth at districts last year to fall one place short of qualifying for the state tournament.
Senior Alex Benedict is projected as the fifth-best wrestler in the 135-pound weight class. He also took fifth at the Division II Akron Firestone district in 2010.
Michael Flanagan appears in the Brakeman Report at No. 21 in the 189-pound class.
Brakeman released his annual report the last weekend in January. He projects the top wrestlers in all 14 weight classes, as well as which teams will finish at the top of the team standings at the state tournament. This is the 40th year for the projections.
The state tournament is March 3-5 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State campus.
Cardinals avenge loss to Spartans
The Canfield freshman girls basketball team defeated the only team that has beaten them this season in its 28-16 victory against Boardman on Jan. 31.
Aggressive defense and smart play keyed the Canfield win.
Leading all scorers were Canfield’s Jamie Giambattista with 10 points and Crissy Gelonese with eight points.
“Although we had trouble making some shots, I am very proud of the girls for not giving up and for stepping up to the challenge. We took back our only loss of the season,” said coach Kerrie Haurin.
