Staff report

columbus

A core committee of Ohio PTA members has received grass-roots advocacy and Common Core State Standards Initiative training.

Now they’re using what they’ve learned to spread the word about the standards and to further the Ohio PTA’s mission of advocating on behalf of children.

Ohio PTA supports the Ohio State Board of Education’s decision to adopt the Common Core State Standards and, through a generous grant from National PTA, has been working since July 2010 to engage, educate and train PTA members and parents about the standards.

Ohio PTA board members and other PTA members throughout the state have participated in trainings led by the core committee.

Training topics include CCSS, strategic planning, coalition building, recruitment, media as a tactic and meeting with decision makers.

CCSS workshops are planned for several areas, including at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Austintown.

A location will be announced.

Ohio PTA has also increased its use of social networking.

Facebook posts have increased and Twitter is being used for the first time.

Ohioans are encouraged to “like” Ohio PTA on Facebook and to “follow” Ohio PTA on Twitter.

The Ohio PTA website continues to be a resource for those wishing to advocate on behalf of children.

A CCSS section is a new addition. It can be accessed at www.ptacommoncore.org.

Ohio PTA, a branch of the National PTA, is made up of more than 90,000 members in 586 PTA units throughout the state.

Ohio PTA has been a longtime advocate for public education, a relevant resource for parents and a powerful voice for children.
