YOUNGSTOWN

One of the men who pleaded guilty in a drive-by shooting that left a 7-year-old child wounded will spend the next five years in prison.

Asa Bush, 22, Dearborn Avenue, appeared for sentencing Friday before Judge James C. Evans of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Bush had been indicted on four counts of felonious assault with gun specifications.

He entered into plea agreement with county prosecutors earlier this month and pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault. The remaining three counts were dropped against him. He also pleaded guilty to a gun specification and obstructing justice in another case.

Judge Evans sentenced Bush to four years in prison on the obstructing-official-business charge to run concurrently with a three-year sentence for the felonious assault charge. He also will spend an additional year in prison for using a gun in the crime.

The plea agreement with Bush is contingent upon his testimony against co- defendant Samson Snowden, 20, of Cedar Lane. Snowden also is charged with four counts of felonious assault with gun specifications.

Prosecutors contend that Alfonda Madison, Bush and Snowden shot the child in both legs while she sat in the back seat of a relative’s car at a convenience store on Logan Avenue in June.

Witnesses told police a tan vehicle containing four men drove down Saranac Avenue west of Logan with someone firing shots at the car containing the child.

Family members said the child and other family members had been headed to a local swimming pool. The family had piled into several cars heading to the recreation facility.

Madison, 23, of Dearborn Avenue, also has pleaded guilty to one count of felonious assault in a plea agreement with prosecutors. The remaining three counts of felonious assault against him also were dropped. He also is facing a felony charge of obstructing justice.

The plea agreement with Madison also is contingent upon his testimony against Snowden. Madison will be sentenced at a later date.
