Good showing at indoor meet
The Boardman boys track team sent a handful of runners to the high school indoor open meet at Mount Union University on Feb. 6.
Highlighting the Spartans’ success was junior Devin Campbell, who won the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.62 seconds. Also winning an event was junior Allen Starkey who leaped 20-10 to take first in the long jump.
Also on Sunday, the 4x800-meter relay team of senior Eddie Adu-Poku, Alex Scott, Corey Zell and sophomore Sam Sheronovich placed second overall in 8:50. Adu-Poku also finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:06. Senior Clayvon Finch placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.2 seconds. Sophomore Ian Phillips placed eighth in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet and senior Luis Soloman took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 42-0.
Glenwood seventh-grade boys fall
Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys basketball team fell to 5-6 on the season with a 47-30 loss to Canfield on Jan. 31.
The Spartans were led in the second half by Devin Curd, Gavin Dill, Jamison Lytle and Kelan Millerleile, who all contributed great offensive hustle.
The BGMS eighth-grade boys lost to Canfield 48-17 on Jan. 31. Leading the offense for Glenwood were Preston Wehr with six points and Juan Santiago with three.
BGMS girls win by two
Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade girls basketball team gutted out a big victory over a talented Canfield team 25-23 on Jan. 31.
Leading scorers for the 10-1 team were Kristie Johnson with 15, Natalie Wilson with seven, Marisa Hanna with two points and Bailey Brandt with one.
Tough defense from Elli Hritz and Katie Platt were instrumental in the win.
The eighth-grade Lady Spartans fell to 7-4 on the season with 30-25 loss to Canfield (11-1) on Jan. 31.
Amanda Lipke had seven points and six rebounds. Also chipping in were Amanda Moss with five points, Alison Green with four and Jessica Fox with three.
Boardman wrestlers ranked among best in state
Three Boardman wrestlers have been projected to finish among the top 10 in the state in their respective weight classes by high school wrestling expert Brian Brakeman.
Boardman wrestler John Dillon has been projected to win a state championship at 119 pounds.
Dillon, a junior, finished third in the state in 2009 and fourth in 2010. Boardman competes in Division I in wrestling.
Nick Mancini (103) was predicted No. 6 in his class and Nico Graziani (152) was chosen 10th best in the state in the report.
Brakeman released his annual report the last weekend in January. He projects the top wrestlers in all 14 weight classes, as well as which teams will finish at the top of the team standings at the state tournament. This is the 40th year for the projections.
The state tournament is March 3-5 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State campus.
Frosh fall to GlenOak at Federal League
The Boardman freshman girls basketball team finished the season with a loss to GlenOak in the opening round of the Federal League tournament Feb. 5.
Alyssa Conti led the Spartans with six points. Alexia Santiago and Anna Patoray added a pair of foul shots each.
The Spartan freshman finished the season 10-5 and 9-3 in the Federal League.
Strong third quarter not enough for Spartan girls
Canfield’s man-to-man pressure kept the Boardman High School freshman girls basketball team from getting good looks at the hoop during its 28-16 loss to Canfield on Jan. 31.
After being down at half again, a strong third quarter put the Spartans on top. But, the Cardinals took over the fourth quarter and pulled away.
Taylor Prebble led the Spartans scoring with five points, including a three-pointer. Alexia Santiago added four points and Anna Patoray scored three.
Freshman girls get win over Hoover
The Boardman High School freshman girls basketball team switched to full court pressure and came back from a 14-4 deficit to win 31-20 over Hoover on Jan. 29.
Alyssa Conti led the scoring with 12 points. Anna Patoray and Alexia Santiago applied most of the pressure resulting in six points each. Kennedy Kesner added two buckets.
Perry outperformed Spartan girls
The Boardman High School freshman girls basketball team suffered a 34-8 loss to Perry on Jan. 26.
Taylor Prebble scored four points for the Spartans and Anna Patoray and Kennedy Kesner each added a bucket.
Penguin swimmers to compete at YSU
Penguin Swimming, a local USA swim team, is hosting the Lake Erie 8 and under championships Sunday at 9 a.m. at Youngstown State University.
The event features 35 teams and the swimmers will be competing for the top spot in 10 events.
