The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley has created the DSAV Academic Scholarship program.

The scholarship program is open to residents of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania who are pursuing studies in a field of education that will benefit people with Down syndrome.

Applicants must be enrolled in an Ohio or Pennsylvania four-year college and be majoring in general or special education. The independent academic scholarship committee will review applications and one candidate will be selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship for the 2011-12 school year.

“DSAV is committed to enhancing the lives of its members and the local community,” said Josh Zarlenga, organization treasurer. “This scholarship will present a unique opportunity to further the education of a student interested in fulfilling the future needs of special education in our community.”

Applications, along with essay and other documentation, must be submitted by April 30. Details are available on the DSAV website, www.dsav.org, or by calling the DSAV Center for Success at 330-726-3728.

The 2011 grant recipient will be notified by June 1. The scholarship presentation will occur Aug. 13 at the DSAV Buddy Walk.
