The students of Dobbins Elementary took a tour through the human body on Jan. 28 thanks to the COSI on Wheels program.
The Columbus-based Center for Science and Industry (COSI) was represented by employee Chris Husmann during an assembly and afternoon of activities at Dobbins. During his assembly, Husmann explored how the brain controls all senses and stimuli with ease and showed an X-ray machine to the crowd.
“A parent actually came up to help me with the X-ray. Usually I have to drag up a teacher,” Husmann reflected. “I could tell Dobbins was different than other schools then. The parents are involved, the kids are excited to learn. It was a great day for everyone.”
After the assembly, the children divided into grade-level groups to explore nine activity stations manned by PTO volunteers that focused on health, nutrition, and systems of the body. Favorite stations of the students included a test of resting and active heart rates, and a microscope attached to a television monitor, where the students took closer looks at their fingerprints and hair follicles.
Dobbins principal Cheryl Borovitcky appreciated the day of hands-on learning.
“Today’s presentation explored health and wellness in a very fun way for all grade levels. The participation of my students was absolutely outstanding today,” she shared.
