Blue defeats Jefferson, pinned by Edgewood
The Austintown Middle School Blue wrestling team defeated Jefferson 42-33 Feb. 7 and dropped a close one to Edgewood Braden 43-46.
Scoring pins for AMS were Desmond Gey, Adam Green, Zach Pugh, Shane Dillon, Harry Baumgartner, Jacob Franks and Justin Goist.
AMS Red takes win in double overtime play
The Austintown Middle School Red basketball team defeated Boardman Center in double overtime 48-45.
Alec Cho led all scorers with 19 points and hit a last second three pointer to send the game into its first overtime.
Jake Bullen had 11 points and also hit a last second three pointer to send the game into the second overtime.
Boardman Center beats AMS Blue boys
The Austintown Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team was defeated by Boardman Center 37-20 on Feb. 3.
Leading the Falcons were Patrick Gerberry and Derrin Hall with seven points each. Gino Rozzi put up three points, Tommy James two and Dylan Strong had one.
Red upsets Youngstown Christian
Austintown Middle School Red boys defeated Youngstown Christian 51-26 to go 9-3 on the year.
Zac Carr led the way with 15 points, while Nick Heitzer chipped in eight, Noah Suchora added nine and Jake Bullen scored seven.
AMS falls to Massillon
The Austintown Middle School Blue eighth-grade boys basketball team lost to Massillon 43-26 on Jan. 29.
Tommy James lead the team in scoring with 10 points. Gino Rozzi and Patrick Gerberry added four points and Darrin Hall scored three. Chris Cole had two points and Deonte Brown added one.
Wrestler is state ranked by Brakeman
Fitch wrestler Jamie Jameson has been projected to finish among the wrestlers in the state in his respective weight class by high school wrestling expert Brian Brakeman.
Jameson is ranked No. 24 in the 171-pound weight class by Brakeman. The junior did not qualify for districts last season in Division I, but has over 30 wins already this season. He placed at both the Alliance Top Gun and Josh Hephner Memorial tournaments.
Brakeman released his annual report the last weekend in January. He projects the top wrestlers in all 14 weight classes, as well as which teams will finish at the top of the team standings at the state tournament. This is the 40th year for the projections.
The state tournament is March 3-5 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State campus.
Penguin swimmers to compete at YSU
Penguin Swimming, a local USA swim team, is hosting the Lake Erie 8 and under championships Sunday at 9 a.m. at Youngstown State University.
The event features 35 teams and the swimmers will be competing for the top spot in 10 events.
AMS eighth-graders win two
The Austintown Middle School Red eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated Warren White 48-30 on Jan. 25.
The Falcons were led by Aaliyah Sadler with 29 points. Andrea Fitzgerald added nine points and Rebekah Pipe added eight points in the victory.
Sadler took over the game in the second half, scoring 19 of the Falcons’ 24 second-half points. Fitzgerald and Pipe controlled the boards in the second half.
The girls defeated Jefferson 43-17 four days later. Fitzgerald led the team in scoring with 16 points. Sadler chipped in with 14 points and Pipe added nine points. The inside presence of the Falcons was too much for Jefferson to handle. The offensive execution was the best of the season.
The girls lost to Youngstown Christian 27-21 on Jan. 31, ending their winning streak.
The Falcons pulled within two points at the end of the third quarter, but were outscored by four points in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons were led by Sadler with 10 points. Fitzgerald and Pipe added four points each.
