Sharing scarves

After the girls were finished with their scarves, they worked on Valentine’s cards that they delivered along with their stylish neckwear.

Hannah Balash (left) and Lauren Perchak (right) were working their fingers to the bone placing beads on the ends of their fleece scarves, but managed to do so with a smile.

The girls of ARK modeled their scarves to make sure that the stylish neckwear would look great for the kids of Sojourner House. Holy Family’s Acts of Random Kindness (ARK) Club is made up of 17 fourth-graders who have been doing a bit of good each month since the start of their school year.
This month, the girls made scarves and Valentine’s cards for the children of Sojourner House in Youngstown.
The club’s leader, Tina Kali, thinks it’s never too early to learn about service.
“An important part of Catholic education is learning to be service-oriented and to work for others. This is mostly discussed in theory, but why not learn through practice? All of us can give something that starts small, but can get much bigger,” Kali explained.
The club began when a Poland Girl Scout troop disbanded and the girls longed for a group to serve the community and support a sense of sisterhood. Throughout the Holy Family school year, the ARK girls have sent Christmas cards to community organizations, caroled at a soup kitchen, toured Second Harvest Food Bank and made Halloween candy bags for charity.
On Jan. 28, the girls gathered for their Valentine’s-themed January activity. Many of the students made girls scarves and added decorative details like beads to the ends of the scarves.
“We know girls like a little bit of bling, so we thought the beads would be nice,” explained Marissa Mangino as she worked.
Angelina Sabatino explained how important ARK is to her.
“I love this club. We get to do nice stuff and give to the community, and go to new places at the same time.”
For their February activity, the ARK girls are making blankets for premature babies at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
