Prosecutors are expected to file charges and arraign an 18-year-old South Side man arrested after the investigation into the mass shooting at a home used by Youngstown State University fraternity members.
Police and prosecutors did not release much information about the arrest of Jamelle Jackson while police were serving search warrants Wednesday.
Authorities have said Jackson was arrested during searches of various homes in the city, but have not said what charges will be formally filed against him.
Records at the Mahoning County jail list Jackson as being arrested at 8:17 p.m. Wednesday on a felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon.
Jackson was expected to appear Thursday for arraignment via video before Judge Robert Douglas of Youngstown Municipal Court, but that hearing has been postponed until today.
Clerks in the city prosecutor’s office would neither deny nor confirm the charge. They said they had been instructed only to say that “there is nothing more to add,” in the investigation.
Jamail Johnson, 25, a YSU senior and fraternity member, was killed in the shooting at his Indiana Avenue residence Sunday. Eleven others were injured.
One of the injured — 17-year-old Shavai Owens — was shot in the head and had been listed in critical condition. The family has not released any additional information about the girl’s condition, and calls to a family spokesman were not returned Thursday.
A check of police files shows police arrested Jackson in October 2009 on charges of abduction and aggravated robbery. He and three other men arrested with him then told police it was a joke that went wrong.
The 19-year-old victim told police he received a call from a friend asking him to ride to the store with him. The victim said he agreed and was picked up by the other man with two additional males in the car. He said the group went to a house on West Judson Avenue before going to the store.
The man told police that while he was on Judson, three men wearing black ski masks ran up to the vehicle, pointed a gun at his head saying, “This is a robbery!” The victim said the men ordered him to get in the trunk of the car, but he ran off through backyards to the house of a friend.
Boardman police pulled over a car containing five black men, including Jackson. The victim told police the car was the one in which he was riding and the men were the same who pulled a gun on him.
Jackson, who was 17 at the time and found with a black ski mask, was one of the men in the car. Jackson and the other men in the car told police that they had no intention of robbing the man.
“It was a joke. We weren’t really going to hurt him,” Jackson reportedly told police.
Another one of the men told police “I know nothing. I have amnesia,” according to police reports. Police also found two BB guns associated with the men in the car. All five were arrested.
