St. David’s Day celebration scheduled in New Castle


NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A St. David’s Day celebration has been scheduled for Feb. 26 at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, 220 Clen-Moore Blvd. The event will begin with a social and puppet show at 2 and will include a Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh singing festival) at 3, dinner at 4 and entertainment.

Pastime Puppets, a program featuring marionettes and hand puppets, Welsh folktales and vignettes of Welsh heritage, will be presented by children and adult members of Mahoning Presbyterian Church.

Geriant Wilkes, Welsh tenor, will conduct the Gymanfa Ganu and serve as master of ceremonies for the after-dinner entertainment. Lois Hopkins of New Wilmington will be the accompanist.

Sisters Allison and Laura Miller of Lisbon will perform musical selections on the harp and fiddle, and the Johnson sisters, of Farmdale, Grace, Zoe, Edie and Sammie, will perform with their mother, Amy, as accompanist.

The after-dinner Welsh Noson Llawen entertainment will include storytelling, instrumental selections, poetry recitations and singing.

The social and puppet show are free and open to the public.

The dinner will include leek soup, potatoes, rutabagas, green peas, cucumbers in sour cream, homemade rice pudding and Welsh cakes. The cost is $23.50 per person. Children’s meals of chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, rice pudding, Welsh cakes and lemonade are $8 per child.
